The first Winnipeg Music Festival was held in 1919. It had 274 entries in 38 classes.

In 2009 the Winnipeg Music Festival ran for 23 days, had more than 3000 entries in 500 classes. Participants come from Manitoba, north-west Ontario and the northern United States.
