There are a lot of movies & TV series that have been either totally or partially filmed in Winnipeg.
Some of them were big Hollywood movies such as Capote that won Academy Awards, others not that well known. Some of them were made for TV movies or were direct to video.
Stars such as Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Susan Sarandon, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dennis Quaid, Randy Quaid, Kevin Pollak, Shirley MacLaine, Eric Roberts, Jane Seymour, James Brolin, Brian Dennehy, Rob Lowe, Christoper Plummer, Milla Jovovich, Renée Zellweger, Patrick Swayze, Ben Kingsley have acted in these movies.
I'm not saying all of these movies were winners, some of them were real stinkers. They are not being rated or recommended here, just listed because they have a Winnipeg connection.

In November, 1959, Truman Capote reads an article on a back page of the New York Times about the murders of four members of a well known farm family, the Clutters, from Kansas.
Truman Capote tests his long held theory that, in the hands of the right writer, non-fiction can be as compelling as fiction.
What impact have the murders had on that tiny town on the wind swept plains? With that as his subject for his purpose, it does not matter if the murderers are never caught he convinces The New Yorker magazine to give him an assignment and he sets out for Kansas.
The killers are caught and are returned to Kansas, where they are tried, convicted and sentenced to die. Capote while visiting them in jail gets to know them and realizes that what he had thought was just going to be a magazine article has grown into a book.
His subject is now as profound as any an American writer has ever tackled. It is nothing less than the collision of two Americas: the safe, protected country the Clutters knew and the rootless, amoral country inhabited by their killers.

In the remote Alpine village of Tolzbad at the turn of the century, people talk quietly and restrain their movements lest avalanches come and kill them. This atmosphere lends itself to repressed emotions - shown through the parallel stories of butler student Johann lusting after his mother (an old flame of the mysterious Count Knotkers) and Klara's attraction to her father (who lusts after his other daughter), leading to duels and suicidal plunges galore. All this is shot in the style of an early German sound film, complete with intertitles, deliberately crackly soundtrack and 'hand-tinted' colour effects.

A series of devastating storms are leveling major cities across the globe, and it's up to a discredited scientist, a dedicated storm chaser, and a FEMA head to journey into the eye of the storm and find out just why mother nature has turned so violently on mankind in the sequel to 2004's weather-gone-wild thriller Category 6: Day of Destruction.
The Eiffel Tower has been leveled, the Great Pyramids reduced to rubble, and funnel clouds lay waste to anything and everything in their path. The three heroes have to discover whether the malevolent weather is the cause of global warming, or something far more sinister. A ballet rendition of Bram Stoker's gothic novel DRACULA, presented in a style reminiscent of the silent expressionistic cinema of the early 20th Century. This work employs the subtle and sometimes bold use of color to emphasize its themes, but mainly is presented in black-and-white, or tinted in monochrome. No spoken dialogue can be heard, and the story of a sinister but intriguing immigrant who preys upon young English women unfolds through dance, pantomime and subtitles.

A serial killer has been terrorizing the city. An innocent bystander witnesses his latest attack, but while fleeing, she falls from a bridge and is knocked unconscious. When she awakes in the hospital, she can't recognize family, her boyfriend or even her own face in the mirror.
She is diagnosed with prosopagnosia, or "face blindness", a real neurological disorder, like dyslexia but with faces, caused by a lesion of the temporal lobe. She is incapable of recognizing the same face twice. Every time she looks at someone, it's like she's never met them before.
Being the only witness, she is hunted by the killer, leaving her paranoid in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Where can she turn? Who can she trust? Who is she waking up next to? Who is standing next to her?

A shy teenager, Dawn, attempts to please the world but feels like she can please no one. Unlike most people, who are able to express extreme emotions outwardly through words or through tears, Dawn's only mechanism for channeling her pain is through self-injury. This physical pain brought on by cutting or burning herself secures for Dawn relief from the emotional pain that she otherwise would be unable to release. The film provides an insightful look into a disorder that for years has been disregarded or shunned because people simply were not ready to deal with it.
