Winnipeg's Union Train Station, situated near The Forks on Main Street in downtown Winnipeg, was built by the Canadian Northern Railway and National Transcontinental Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. As it was designed by Warren and Wetmore, the architects responsible for Grand Central Terminal in New York City it has aa few simular features.
After opening in 1911, the Union Station was an important transportation hub. Thousands of immigrants passed through its doors
In 1978 VIA Rail took over passenger rail services and has operated out of the Union Station ever since.
The trainshed, which includes a total of eight through tracks and four passenger platforms, houses the Winnipeg Railway Museum on two tracks and two platforms.
